Today I attended the workshop ‘Please Enjoy The Social Web’ on the Design @ Work trade show in Kortrijk (Belgium) (link). Full of anticipation I woke up this morning at 6 a.m. to catch my train to Kortrijk from Brussels. An early wake-up (certainly for a student) but absolutely worth it, I figured.
I arrived 5 minutes past starting time as announced, were it not that the facility where it was held was still closed. Apparently Ji (The main speaker) was a bit late and the organisers (FlandersDC) didn’t think that some people might be on time and would have appreciated the warmth of the indoor. If that wasn’t enough, the ‘fashionably late’ turned into ‘annoyingly late’ and badly prepared from, dare I say it, the organisation. When they finally decided to let us in, it took another hour to prepare themselves and offer us a first drink.
In my wait for a nice cup of coffee, I strolled a bit around. The seminar was held in a trade show about design objects at work, so I certainly didn’t lack entertainment. Although because of that, I seriously considered given up the seminar to give my eyes that wealth of design goodies.
Anyway, it’s 9.45 a.m. and they finally finished their technicalities and guest enrolment. After a series of apologies, the seminar started with the first keynote from Ji Lee.
I have to say I was quite impressed. Ji Lee, creative director at Google Labs in New York City was a very friendly and calm guy that had the ability (and used it as well) to entertain, fascinate and especially inspire us. His keynote was very structured and divided as such that all of his personal and professional topics came about. This also illustrates the main message that was visible in all of them: “A mix of personal and professional is awesome!” and boy did I believe him!
This is a quick overview of the main projects Ji Lee was talking about on the Work @ Design trade show in Kortrijk:

Jabra BT620s
I’ve been having a lot of issues lately trying to pair or connect my bluetooth headset (Jabra BT620s) and my Macbook Pro running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I googled around a bit and didn’t really find a solution for all my problems. Most of the times the transmitted audio (in stereo) was very poor. At other times iTunes constantly quite unexpectedly or my bluetooth functionality just turned itself out permanently (at least until reboot).
After much hassle I found a solution that kind of fixes the issue. Before I start pairing or connection my headset I just recharge it using the adapter for a few seconds. This resets the phone in some way (of which the specifics are not yet know to me). After this reset everything seems to work fine.
If I would encounter an exception to this, I’ll let you know.
Since a month Collibra adopted a new work-flow to create video tutorials. These short videos are meant to support the end-user, lower the learning curve and make the knowledge acquisition about our products more attractive and fun.
After a couple of months trial and error a decent work-flow was found to suit our needs and rapidly create videos of a high quality.

Yesterday, in my search for inspiration at work. More in particular, some little background deco for buttons on the main website, I bumped into this website that offers a huge amount of royalty-free vector silhouettes. Really handy!
My final project has finished gracefully with a mark of 16 out of 20 and my first paper submission. Together with my mentor, I wrote a paper about this project and its context to submit to the ORM2009 conference to be held in Portugal in November.
The workshop is primarily aimed at researchers and practitioners interested in conceptual modeling approaches for the analysis and design of information systems and ontologies, including modeling of data, processes and events. Attendees familiar with fact-oriented approaches have the opportunity to update and deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area. Attendees less familiar with fact-oriented approaches have an ideal opportunity to learn about the approach from world experts in the area, and adopt or adapt the many benefits of the approach.

Today I sent HTC a complaint about all the issues the HTC Touch Diamond II still has, even after releasing their first ROM upgrade:
Hi, A couple of
weeks ago I purchased the new HTC Touch Diamond II after my old QTEC S200 broke down. Now, I know that with new and advanced technology a couple of issues may appear in the first release but the more I use this device the more I get dissatisfied. These are a couple of issues I am really annoyed by:
- I cannot rely on my Alarm Clock because it just doesn’t work sometimes. This is a really essential feature that just cannot fail! Or the phone just switches itself off during the night (while charging) or an event appears first after which my alarm doesn’t produce any sound.
- Why is there an option to get a delivery report for an sms that switches itself off every single time? What is the point of that?
- The battery of this phone last for at most 12 hours with moderate usage. This is just unacceptable, I have to make sure that everywhere I go, I have my charger with me, otherwise I might have a useless piece of tech by the end of the day.
- I sometimes receive empty messages, not just with an empty body, but an empty header as well. So an empty message that I received from nobody but my own phone.

Recently I was forced to go and buy myself a new cell because the speaker of the previous one (QTEC S200) was broken. This meant no ring tones anymore and I just couldn’t live with the fact that I had to check my phone at least every hour to see if there weren’t any missed calls.
Now after a very long and intensive search for a new cell, mainly within the product range of HTC, LG and Apple I decided to get myself the new HTC Touch Diamond II. This decision was mainly based upon the fact that LG didn’t support 3rd party applications, which I still consider a huge design flaw, and Apple, well everybody wants one or has one an nobody can use all provided hardware functionality (GPS for ex.)
After using the Touch Diamond II for about a week or two I developed a deep love for it. But like every love, there are those small annoyances which I’m going to elaborate on right now.

Today I’ve been looking for a way to print my code efficiently for my bachelor project. I use to copy paste everything but from now on this is a thing of the past. I decided to use LaTeX to format my code as it can pretty much do everything else.
I found a package that could help me print my code: listings
Now, there is no preset yet for ActionScript and apparently no Flex or Flash coder uses LaTeX frequently and is willing to share his preset. This forced me to create one myself and here is the result: Continue Reading »
